WRAS is acting as foster parents for a number of young hedgehogs at the moment. Including providing accomodation for a mum and babies in WRAS's Uckfield based Hedgehog Maternity Shed.

A hedgehog was found in Heathfield  a couple of weeks ago after being disturbed by a dog, being pregnant the hedgehog started to give birth to her babies on the lawn.  Rescuers had to scoop up mum and babies and deliver them across to WRAS's Maternity Shed in Uckfield where they were bedded down in the peace and quiet to sort themselves out.

The hedgehog turned out to micro-chipped and was "Chewbacca" a hedgehog which had been released in the garden back at Easter after being over wintered at WRAS due to being too small to hibernate.  Chewbacca and her young C3PO and R2D2 and doing really well and have survived the traumatic start to life. Without WRAS stepping in these two youngsters would not have survived.

WRAS's Oprhan Mammal Rearing Unit has four groups of young hedgehogs including four all from Herewood Way in Lewes which ranged from 80 to 120grams found over several days.

Two came in from South Heighton, 5 from Trevor Gardens at Glydne, and the others are all individuals from across the country found wandering around in the day time.

Most of these have needed syringe feeding when first admitted but most of them are now moving onto lapping and eating for themselves.

They will eventually be soft released back to the wild to help keep the local populations running strong in the same areas as to where found.
