East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) had to go outside their area to rescue a swan in desperate need of rescue as no one more local was available at the time.

The Swan was reported as having bailer twine round its neck which was also attached to a brick.

The distressed swan was on a pond in the Singing Hills Golf Course at Albourne yesterday.

Rescuers Chris Riddington and Katie Nunn Nash arrived just before 1pm and located the swan, who was with its mate and 4 cygnets.

“The swan was clearly dragging something in the water but it was difficult to see what it was” explained Chris.

Chris used a net on one bank and Katie used a swan hook on the other to try and catch the swan but initial attempts were unsuccessful.  Rescuers had to resort to inflating one of WRAS’s rescue boats and Katie took to the water to try and contain the swan into a smaller section of water where Chris was then able to use a net on an extended pole to catch the swan and pull her to the bank.

“Once on the bank we were able to  removed a length of bailer twine that had a brick attached to the end.  The swan was clearly very stressed by having to drag this weight through the water. After a once over she was returned back to her family relieved to be free. It was so nice to see her go off and rejoin her family and stretch her wings and paddle around unhindered” explained Katie.
