Hedgehog with the munchies gets stuck at Alfriston!

A hedgehog with the munchies got stuck in a basement area outside a shop in Alfriston High Street on Friday 8th June 2012. Rescuers from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) were called out by staff from "Munchilicious" a shop in Alfriston High Street, after discovering the hedgehogs down a small basement area outside on the high street.

With a group of tourist watching from the village square, rescuer Trevor Weeks had to squeeze his head and arms through a narrow gap on the pavement to reach the trapped hedgehog. It was not easy to get too and he was so far back that I really had to get my head in and reach into the basement area to reach the poor little creature.

Rescuers managed to get the hedgehogs out unharmed where it was assessed and found to be underweight, dehydrated and an infected left eye.

Back at East Sussex WRAS's Casualty Care Centre at Whitesmith the hedgehogs was given medication and bedded down in a much cleaner environment where he is now having his problems treated.

Hedgehogs have been having a bit of a rough ride recently. The really dry weather caused many to come into care dehydrated and starving after having difficulty finding food, and now the sudden wet and cold weather is causing those already debilitated to have even more problems. Clearly this hedgehog saw the sign on the shop and thought he might find some nice food!

WRAS is urging people that if they see a hedgehogs out during the day time to call their local rescue centre for advice. Hedgehogs should never be out during the daytime and many that we are currently seeing are really seriously ill and need help urgently.

East Sussex WRAS can only help these creatures thanks to your support. You can now make a donation to WRAS by phoning 01825873003, sending a donation to East Sussex WRAS, PO Box 2148, Seaford, East Sussex, BN25 9DE or online.
