A swan has had to be rescued after hitting power cables just north of Newhaven.

Rescuer Trevor Weeks MBE, Chris Riddington and Dave Novel from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) rescued the swan which was in a drainage dyke just north of Newhaven’s Incinerator on Wednesday morning.

“The original report was of a swan with a damaged wing and possibly caught by a dog” said Trevor Weeks, “we found the swan in the water stood on a large submerged stone. Rescuer Chris was able to get close enough to reach out and catch the swan, which although it hissed, was clearly reluctant to swim off. The wing was bent backwards on itself, and clearly fractured.”

The swan was taken to WRAS’s Casualty Care Centre at Whitesmith where is was examined and given medication. After seeking advice from the Swan Sanctuary at Shepperton the swan was driven there where vets are expected to operate on the wing on Thursday morning.

“The injury was not fresh and had potentially happened a few days earlier” said Trevor, “another dead and decomposing swan was also found close by.”
