Its been a busy week at the centre getting jobs finished off. Our new pens now have had the fibreglass done, as well as it also being put in the 3 of our older pens that didn't get done last time. Perches, boxes etc still to do, but we can now start to use them. We have had to move animals and birds around to allow the work to be done due to the noise and smell, but the workmen have been great, using large extractor tubing etc to reduce the smell. Busy day today putting everyone back in their pens, as well as trying to introduce some pigeons into the existing indoor aviary groups who have finished treatment and now need some more time before release. It is always a juggling act as to who will co-exist with who, depending on personalities, 1 male in particular who was introduced today decided his was the boss, so some reshuffling had to be done to move a few more vulnerable birds into the other pen and a trouble making bonded pair were evicted into our outdoor pen as they were the more able, and most dominant of the lot. In general we have 2 indoor aviaries with pigeons, as they build up strength and agility before release, or containing youngsters building up a release group. We usually also have another outdoor pen with longer term birds in, if they aren't going to be ready so quickly, theses usually later get soft released from our release pen when ready as opposed to going back where they came from ...
