Traffic Stops for Swan Rescue

A pair of Swans caused a commotion on the busy Lottbridge Drove dual carriageway in Eastbourne at lunch time today.  The two adult swans landed close to the Tesco store leading to a flood of calls from motorists to East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS).

Two ambulances, one from Polegate and another from the Charities base at Whitesmith, attended on site rapidly.  Traffic had to be stopped whilst rescuers Tony and Chris caught the swans to ensure that the swans did not cause an accident.   One swan was caught easily  but the partner put up much more of a fight and proved much harder to catch.  “When you have traffic wanting to get passed and time is against you, these rescues never turn out as easy as you hope. Tony loaded his swan into his ambulance and it was not long before Chris had his swan under control and out of harm’s way” said Trevor Weeks who held the traffic back.

Luckily traffic was not stopped for too long and was flowing again soon after.

The pair of swans were checked over to ensure they were not injured and then taken along the road to Princes Park where they were released together.
