Fire Service called in to help safely rescue rabbit at Lewes Priory Ruins.
This afternoon East Sussex WRAS was called to a rather unusual rescue at the historic ruins of Lewes Priory, where a rabbit had been spotted seriously injured and trapped on a ledge below ground level.
Our rescuers quickly attended, but the location made it too dangerous to climb down safely without the right equipment. With our key ambulances (and ladders!) tied up on other rescues, we called in the help of East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, who kindly stepped in to assist.
Using ladders and specialist equipment provided by WRAS, the fire crew were able to reach the rabbit, who was moving around on the ledge but clearly unable to climb back out. Once safely secured, the rabbit was passed to waiting WRAS rescuers for immediate care.
Initial assessment suggests the rabbit may have an issue with its eyes, possibly explaining how it ended up falling into the ruins. The rabbit is now under the care of our veterinary team at WRAS’s Casualty Centre for further examination and treatment.
A huge thank you to East Sussex Fire & Rescue for their swift and professional support at such a tricky location – your help made all the difference!
