Vinehall School donate 100 tins of food to help hedgehogs recovering in care!
As part of their commitment to supporting wildlife this year, students from Vinehall School near Battle have chosen to back the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS). With Hedgehog Awareness Week in full swing, the school seized the opportunity to do something both fun and meaningful for our prickly friends.
Through BHPS, Vinehall was put in touch with East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS), and on Thursday, WRAS founder Trevor Weeks MBE visited the school for a truly memorable morning.
Children from Years 2 to 8 were invited to bring in a £1 donation and a tin of dog food to take part in a unique and exciting event: a Grand Tin-Rolling Competition down the school field. With races divided into Juniors, Middles, and Seniors, the competitive spirit was high—and so was the laughter—as tins whizzed down the slope.
Trevor arrived in the WRAS veterinary ambulance and gave an engaging talk to the pupils about the work WRAS carries out across East Sussex, rescuing and rehabilitating hedgehogs and other injured wildlife. He then officially launched the three thrilling races, much to the delight of the students.
Congratulations to Daisy W, Gabriella G, and James H, the proud winners of each age group, who each received a toy hedgehog as a prize. Everyone was treated to a well-earned sweet treat afterward!
Thanks to the incredible generosity of Vinehall families, over 100 tins of food were donated to support hedgehogs currently in care at WRAS—vital supplies at a time when demand on the charity’s services is particularly high. Miraculously, only one tin burst open during the excitement!
East Sussex WRAS would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff, students, and families at Vinehall School for their energy, enthusiasm, and outstanding support.
