Help keep wildlife save this bonfire season

As we head through autumn and into winter, leaves start gathering and garden debris piles up. It’s very tempting to have a bonfire during these chilly months. Piles of wood, branches and leaves may look like the perfect place to shelter for hedgehogs and other wildlife—but they can quickly become deadly when used for bonfires.
The safest option is to build your bonfire on the day it will be lit. If it has been standing for any length of time, move the entire pile to a clear site before lighting it.
Please also:
1. Check underneath carefully using torches and broom handles
2. Light the bonfire from one side only, giving wildlife a chance to escape
3. Keep bonfires and fireworks away from trees, shrubs and woodland
4. Have water ready in case the fire needs to be extinguished
5. Know who to contact if injured wildlife is found
