An award winning wildlife rescue service is holding a Black Tie charity dinner and evening of entertainment at the Cumberland Hotel on Eastbourne Seafront on Friday 22nd November 2013.
Trevor Weeks MBE founder of East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) is inviting people to attend the 3 course dinner where there will also be a champaign reception, silent auction, photographer, DJ and dancing and a guest speaker too.
A Sussex animal charity is urging people to take care during the bonfire season and to follow their top ten tips for helping wildlife and especially keeping hedgehogs safe.
East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) takes in over 400 hedgehogs a year and at this time of year they will be starting to look for and develop hibernation homes to sleep for the winter. Bonfires make perfect places for hedgehogs to hide and sleep, but not necessarily in safety. "Hedgehog numbers are on the decline and we need to help them out as much as possible and this is a simple and easy way to do so" explained WRAS founder Trevor Weeks MBE.
Farmers in East Sussex may be pleased to know that they can now choose to have badgers on their land vaccinated against bovine TB following the recent establishment of the Sussex Badger Vaccination Project, after five local volunteer passed the Badger Vaccination Training Course run by the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency in Gloucestershire.
Rescuers were horrified to be called out to a hedgehog which had been rescued by local residents after being used as football by local youths in the children's playground at Victoria Gardens in Eastbourne.
Rescuer Tony Neads from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) attended on site to pick up the hedgehog after WRAS received the call. "The poor little girl was very frightened and had a number of broken and bent prickles over her body as a result of being kicked, so I rushed the hedgehog up to our Casualty Centre for further assessment" said Tony.
A fox is still smiling and well on the road to recovery after being found injured and burnt at a brick works in Bexhill, East Sussex. Staff at the IBstock Brickworks in Bexhill called out East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) after discovering the fox inside one of their chemical storage rooms.
A baby hedgehog had to be rescued on 10 August after being found stuck in a Christmas Bauble at Isfield in East Sussex.
Volunteer rescuers from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) were called out by staff at the Laughing Fish Pub after discovering a baby hedgehog in distress. "The call was received at 10:30am and the caller reported finding a small hedgehog with a piece of plastic stuck on its back and clearly in distress" said Trevor Weeks MBE founder of East Sussex WRAS.
A volunteer at the Seaford Museum had a shock when they discovered a fox inside the museum today (6th August 2013). The popular old Martello Tower Museum on Seaford's seafront has seen many visitors over the years, but they weren't expecting to find a fox visiting.
Southern Water staff called out East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) after a goose was found trapped in a sewage tank at the Uckfield Water Treatment Works in Uckfield today.
Friday staff noticed the bird had landed in the circular waste water tank being chased by the constantly rotating arm, which they quickly turned off. Staff thought the bird might be able to fly out of its own accord but on Monday the goose was still there so they called for assistance from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS).
Staff at Willingdon Primary School had to call out East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) on Wednesday afternoon (24th July 2013) after a fox was tangled up 5ft off the ground in the middle of a bramble bush on the school playing field.
A deer had to be rescued on the Uckfield railway line at approximately 1am this morning (Thursday 4th July 2013). The male roe deer or buck had baler twine caught round its antlers and neck, which was also attached to a piece of wood caught at the edge of the railway line about 20-30 metres away from the Hempstead lane crossing at Uckfield, in East Sussex.
