Volunteer rescuers from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue helped by staff from Eastbourne Borough Council had to launch an emergency swan rescue after a dead cygnet was found at Decoy Pond, Hampden Park, Eastbourne on Monday. Staff from Eastbourne Borough Council asked specialist veterinary staff from the Shepperton based Swan Sanctuary to post mortem the cygnet. Staff at the sanctuary were shocked at the cygnets condition and that he had weighed just 2.7kg almost half its expected weight due to a severe parasite burden.
Volunteer rescuers from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) have been working hard all day today (15 October) checking over 7 miles of streams, ponds and dykes in the Shinewater, Hampden Park area of Eastbourne after a major sewage leak.
A pair of swans with seven cygnets have been causes chaos of roads round Langney in Eastbourne. Sussex Police have now been called out three time and East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) have received over 100 calls of concern from local residents whilst the family of swans have gone on a walk about round the local housing estate.
Rescuers are frustrated as the law fails to protect two more swans at Hove Lagoon. Two swans had to be rescued over the weekend and volunteer rescues from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) have been called down to rescue two more swans today, one of which is a possible dog attacked swan and the other which is possibly ill as a result of something in the silt.
Swans in East Sussex had a rough ride over the weekend with Wildlife Rescuers needing to rescue one swan which had been shot in the head, a dog attacked swan, a road casualty swan and one which kids were attempting to kick.
The four incidents have infuriated the volunteer rescuers which have had to pick up the pieces.
The winter is supposed to be the quietest time of year for WRAS, but yesterday volunteer rescuers were rushed off their feet with calls to over 21 casualties. Normally the January call-out rate is averages about 5 a day. "This has been an amazingly busy day" said Trevor Weeks " it reminds me of the Boomtown Rats’ song "I Don’t like Mondays"! I hope that the rest of the week does not stay as busy."
