Every day at WRAS you just don't know what is going to happen or what you are going to get called to. Technical Rescues are never the same and each situation is always different to the last. This morning rescuers were called out by Southern Water staff to a site near Cowbeach. Workers noticed a fox down this overgrown channel. Believing the fox was trapped they called out East Sussex WRAS. Rescuers had to use ladders to get to where the channel was but could not see the fox. The channel was about 5ft deep and the vegetation was cleared away to make access easier.
Rescuers had a good look round but could not be sure if the fox was still in the pipe out of sight so had to climb down into the edge of the river using a ladder in order to lift the large cast iron flap which acts as a non-return valve. This luckily showed the pipe to be empty and no fox present. After no sign of the fox rescuers stood down as the fox must have been able to get out of its own accord. The vegetation was cleared further to better enable the fox to jump up and out should it go down there again or be hidden somewhere rescuers could not see.

Recently we have seen 2 fox cubs (from different locations) both having been entangled in foot ball netting.
Any casualty that is admitted after being entangled in netting has to be monitored closely incase ligature wounds appear. This is where the skin has become damaged due to the pressure of the netting, it may not be visable initially but after a few days the skin begins to break down
In both these cases the cubs were very lucky and after a week in care no injuries had developed.
It's not very often we are able to reunite cubs to their family after this length of time but they were at the age where they would be exploring from their dens.
With 1 cubs den in the garden he was found and his family still there as well as the other cubs family still seen regularly in the garden we took the opportunities to reunite both to their families.
2 very happy endings on these occasions but please remember to keep netting off the ground or put it away safely when not in use! ...

This bundle of 5 adorable baby mice were sadly disturbed when a garden wall, where their nest sat, was taken down. With no where safe for them to be left, we had no choice but to bring them into care.
They are all doing very well, have now opened their eyes and have started nibbling away at seed. ...
