Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon Vacancy

Veterinary Surgeon Job Description.

Sadly our current veterinary surgeon Lourdes Cortes Saez will be returning home to Spain at the end of her contract in September. She has become a vital part of our Care Team helping to improve the standards of care we can provide to sick and injured wildlife.

As a result East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) has an exciting Veterinary Surgeon role becoming available to join our team of staff and volunteers based in the centre of East Sussex. You will need to be efficient, confident, kind and must be passionate about wildlife welfare from pigeons to peregrines and from dormice to deer. You will be working alongside dedicated staff and volunteers who form our veterinary supervised Care Team, Rescuers and Care Assistants. We are registered with the RCVS as a veterinary practice for over 15 years and have been slowly expanding our veterinary capability to the point that 2 years ago we employed our own veterinary surgeon for the first time. Our current vet is returning to her home and family in Spain, meaning we are not in recruiting a new veterinary surgeon to work with her in her final months and to look at taking the role forward. We deal with over 5000 UK native wildlife casualties every year.

What we do:

WRAS is East Sussex’s primary a dedicated 24 hour wildlife rescue service. Our mission is to rescue, care for and rehabilitate, displaced, injured, lost or abandoned wildlife and to prevent unnecessary suffering, returning them to their home range wherever possible.

Our vision is to be the leading provider of veterinary care and treatment to all wildlife across East Sussex.

We operate several volunteer driven veterinary ambulances who collect wildlife casualties and take them to our hospital for assessment by our Care Team who are supervised and trained by vets.  We have a veterinary theatre, anaesthetic machine, digital x-ray and an ultrasound machine we would like to expand our veterinary capabilities. Are you the person to help us do that?

What we can offer you:

A good overlap to work with Lourdes before she leaves for Spain.

A positive supportive environment, working within our lay staff and consultant vets.

Varied and interesting caseload including emergencies and critical cases.

Involvement in exciting future plans to build a new veterinary hospital and facilities.

Flexible Hours – 18 hours a week. Increasing to 28 during the busy months.

Salary based on experience.

Statutory Holiday.

Statutory Pension.
