Swans in East Sussex had a rough ride over the weekend with Wildlife Rescuers needing to rescue one swan which had been shot in the head, a dog attacked swan, a road casualty swan and one which kids were attempting to kick.

Volunteer rescuers from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service (WRAS) have had an extremely busy start to 2008 and over the weekend over 70 phone calls were received reporting casualties.

"Normally at this time of year our average is more like 5-10 calls a day, this is over 3 times that number." said Trevor Weeks founder of East Sussex WRAS. » Read more

The winter is supposed to be the quietest time of year for WRAS, but yesterday volunteer rescuers were rushed off their feet with calls to over 21 casualties. Normally the January call-out rate is averages about 5 a day. "This has been an amazingly busy day" said Trevor Weeks " it reminds me of the Boomtown Rats’ song "I Don’t like Mondays"! Volunteer rescuers from East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service rescuers were called out by Eastbourne’s "Swan Watch" yesterday (Wednesday) after a cygnet was seen acting strangely and gagging with line hanging out its mouth.

WRAS rescuers were on site fairly quickly and luckily the cygnet came out of the water and rescuers were able to catch the cygnet fairly quickly. The line was no longer in the mouth but entering a puncture wound at the back of the neck. » Read more

Further to our previous press release, the cygnet has now had its surgery to remove the hook and the vet has given the cygnet the all clear to be returned to Langney Pond tomorrow (Friday). WRAS rescuers will drive to collect the swan tomorrow morning and return him to his family at Langney, Eastbourne. » Read more

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service called out East Sussex Wildlife Rescue &and Ambulance Service after being receiving a call that a fox was trapped in the old air ventilation ducting inside the Debenhams store in Terminus Road, Eastbourne yesterday afternoon. » Read more
