WRAS were called out this morning to Broad Road, Willingdon. After reports of mummy duck and 4 ducklings wandering around near the road.
When rescuers arrived they were told that despite them trying to be kept safe, the family had been worried by cats and moved through gardens and sadly 3 ducklings had disappeared. Despite searches incase they were just lost only mum and single duckling could be found.
Ducks nest away from water and then once their ducklings have hatched, they know exactly where they want to go and start walking them to the water source.
We were hoping mum was heading to the river by farmlands avenue but it soon became clear she wanted to go the other direction which would mean crossing Eastbourne Road.
Rescuers allowed mum to lead the way whilst keeping her and her duckling safe from cars, cats and other hazards.
The final part of her walk forced us to stop traffic to allow them to safely cross over Eastbourne Road and enabling her to reach the stream in which she was heading. ...
