Hedgehog Awareness Week

Come along and meet a real live hedgehog and learn more about what you can do to help these amazing creatures. East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service is holding a Hedgehog Awareness Day as part of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society's Hedgehog Awareness Week, at its rescue centre at Whitesmith, between Hailsham and Uckfield on Saturday 12th May 2012.

Entry is free, but places are limited and people need to book in advance for an hour long session starting at either 11am, 1pm, 3pm or 5pm. Places can be booked by calling 01825873003.

The hour long session will give people the opportunity to meet a real live hedgehog, see how we check them over and give people a better understanding of how to take care of visiting hedgehogs in their gardens. "We really hope that these sessions will help people understand some of the problems which hedgehogs face and how we can help prevent many of the injuries from occurring and to keep them safe and happy in our residential areas" said WRAS founder Trevor Weeks.

WRAS is a member of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and has been for over 15 years. "I think we must have rescued and helped well over 2500 hedgehogs within the history of WRAS going back over 25 years, annually we now deal with over 200 hedgehogs a year, many of the incidents could be avoided and we hope that this event will help people to recognise problems for hedgehogs and hopefully help prevent some of them from occurring" added Trevor.
